Lucinda Williams – I Lost It

Happy Birthday Lucinda. I know. She’s not like Cher or Adele. She has a last name. But when someone says, “Lucinda,” you know who they mean, don’t you? And now I have to choose ONE song from SO MANY great ones. The one I’m choosing is so good she recorded it twice. The first version — from 1980’s “Happy Woman Blues” — is a jaunty, fiddle-backed country version. The version I chose is from “Car Wheels on a Gravel Road” (1998), and there’s nothing jaunty about it. It’s raw and visceral. Electric guitar with the distortion and reverb turned way up. Drums that don’t hide in the background. Background accordion (and then a solo) that roots this song in Zydeco country. And a vocal performance that is one of Lucinda’s greatest — soulful and soaring. Confident and vulnerable at the same time. This song gives me chills (the good kind) every time I hear it. Neil Diamond (with The Band) – Dry Your Eyes

It’s Neil Diamond’s 81st birthday (1/24/2022). I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan… …maybe because I’ll pull my hair out if I hear another sports stadium crowd do that Sweet-Caroline-singalong (if you don’t know what I’m talking about, count your blessings). Now that I have that cynical outburst out of my system… …I have to say there’s one Neil Diamond song I like a lot. It’s the song I share today, and it’s the one and only song he sang during The Band’s “The Last Waltz” concert. I happened upon “The Last Waltz” while channel surfing over the weekend. (It had been a few years since I’d seen it. Such a great concert film.) I tuned in just as Neil Diamond took the stage. I love this song — especially this version with  Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson backing him. Today’s Song  Title: Dry Your Eyes Artist: Neil Diamond (with The Band) Album: The Band’s “The Last Waltz”(Recorded, November 25, 1976; released in 1978) YouTube Link:  youtu.be/ohKqaWmHCCQ Lyrics  Dry your eyes, take your song out When it’s a newborn afternoon And if you can’t recall the singer, can you still recall the tune? Dry your eyes and play it slowly, just like you’re marching off to war Sing it like you always wanted, like you sung it once before And from the center of the circle, to the biggest of the waiting crowd If it ever is forgotten, sing it long and sing it loud And come dry your eyes And you taught us more about living, than we ever cared to know And we came to learn a secret, and we never let it go And it was more than being holy, though it was less than being free And if you can’t recall the reason, can you hear the people see? Right through the lightening and the thunder, to the dark side of the moon To that distant falling angel, that descended much too soon Come dry your eyes Dry your eyes, take your song out It’s a newborn afternoon And if you can’t recall the singer, you can still recall the tune And come dry your eyes Come dry your eyes Dry your eyes Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:…

John Gorka – Holed Up in Mason City

Howdy. Sorry I’ve been such a stranger. I’ve been holed up in the home office, working hard on some other things… …and (sorry to say) letting these emails slip. Glad to be back. And glad to share some good news… I’ve tentatively scheduled the reopening of the (ware)HOUSE. Nothing I can announce today. But stay tuned. I should have news soon. Meanwhile, enjoy today’s song about another guy who’s been holed up… Today’s Song  Title: Holed Up in Mason City Artist: John Gorka Album: Bright Side of Down (2014) YouTube Link:  youtu.be/wAC7Q5ep7Wo Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Ruby Boots – Don’t Give a Damn

A shout-out to my friend Angela Kelly. She hosted today’s artist at one of her always-great Kelly House Concerts… …and I’ve been hooked ever since… …on Ruby Boots. Born Rebecca Louise “Bex” Chilcott, Ruby Boots is originally from Australia who settled in Nashville a few years ago. Her pal Brandy Zdan appeared with her at Angela’s house. That’s how I discovered Brandy, too — leading to her appearance at (ware)HOUSE Concerts in January 2019. Lots of great songs to choose from. Here’s the last track from her most recent album. btw…I couldn’t find a YouTube for this song. But I DID find a video from the very Kelly House Concert, I mentioned. Thanks @justfragvideo for posting it. It’s the title track from the album noted below… Today’s Song  Title: Don’t Give a Damn Artist: Ruby Boots Album: Don’t Talk About It (2018) YouTube Link:  “Don’t Talk About It” from Kelly House ConcertsSep 23, 2018: youtu.be/04aTaBCBTqY Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Israel Nash – Down in the Country

After a brief visit to 1994 to wish Shawn Colvin a happy birthday, let’s get back to some of the best of 2021. Israel Nash grew up in the Missouri Ozarks. His father was a preacher. His mother was an artist. Both encouraged him to pursue music. He moved to New York and then on to Texas — which now claims him. But since most of us are in St. Louis, let’s claim him as a Missourian. Today’s song comes from his April 2021 album Topaz. He actually pre-released this tune in December 2020. But who’s counting? It’s on my 2021 favorites list. Shawn Colvin – Killing the Blues

Happy Birthday, Shawn Colvin. She was born on January 10, 1958. In 1994, she released an album of covers that included the song I share today. That song was written by Rowland Salley, who played bass in Chris Isaak’s band. Salley never got anywhere as a solo artist, although he did release an album that includes this song. And it’s a GREAT song. It’s been covered by John Prine, Chris Smither, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Shooter Jennings and Billy Ray Cyrus, and Colvin — whose version I like best… Today’s Song  Title: Killing the Blues Artist: Shawn Colvin Album: Cover Girl (1994) YouTube Link:  youtu.be/HEX5AFVsdQg Lyrics  Leaves were falling just like embersIn colors red and gold they set us on fireBurning just like moonbeams in our eyes Somebody said they saw meSwinging the world by the tailBouncing over a white cloudKilling the blues Now I’m guilty of somethingHope you never do because there is nothingAny sadder than losing yourself in love Somebody said they saw meSwinging the world by the tailBouncing over a white cloudKilling the blues Then you ask me just to leave youTo set out on my own and get what I neededYou want me to find what I’ve already had  Somebody said they saw meSwinging the world by the tailBouncing over a white cloudKilling the bluesSomebody said they saw meI was swinging the world by the tailBouncing over a white cloudKilling the blues Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Natalie Hemby – Radio Silence

I already featured Natalie Hemby on this list a couple of months ago… …and I haven’t doubled-up on many artists yet. But as I celebrate some of the best 2021 releases, Natalie deserves another nod. Here’s one from her October 2021 release Pins and Needles (great lyrics from a great lyricist included below).. Today’s Song  Title: Radio Silence Artist: Natalie Hemby Album: Pins and Needles (2021) YouTube Link:  youtu.be/31KMOAcviY4 Lyrics  There used a timeWe were two of a kindWhen anything was wrongWe’d talk about itYou’d open up to meHeart on your sleeveTill shadows overshadowed you I tried to reach you thru the growing staticI tried to replicate the fading magicDid everything to keep the signal from dyingAll I got was radio silence It’s like it all went southWhen there was nothing wrongThe way you disappearedCame out of nowhereI wasn’t ready forThe way you shutDoor and left me standing in the frame I tried to reach you thru the growing staticI tried to replicate the fading magicDid everything to keep the signal from dyingAll I got was radio silence I waited thru stormThinking you were comingComing back to meAlarms that used to warnMe that you weren’t callingNever called for me I tried to reach you thru the growing staticI tried to replicate the fading magicDid everything to keep the signal from dyingAll I got was radio silence  I tried to tell you that it’s gonna get betterI tried to put the pieces back togetherDid everything to keep the signal from dyingAll I got was radio silenceRadio silence All I got was radio silence Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Tim O’Brien – Pushing On Buttons (Staring At Screens)

Today… More 2021 goodness from a legend. Tim O’Brien released his new album “He Walked On” last July. Great album. This one sounds old-timey, but it’s about a very modern problem… Today’s Song  Title: Pushing On Buttons (Staring At Screens) Artist: Tim O’Brien Album: He Walked On (2021) YouTube Link:  youtu.be/dGkl6Qf3VUg Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204  Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

NRBQ – The Moon and Other Things

Terry Adams has been with NRBQ for the bands entire 50+-year ride. He’s the only remaining founding member. And with new lineup after new lineup, he has kept that NRBQ sound going… …including in 2021… …with the album Dragnet, the band’s first since 2014, and easily one of my favorites from the past year. I’ve chosen one of the pretty, melodic, whistle-along-with-the-melody numbers for this email. For those who don’t know the band, this isn’t all you get with NRBQ. Listen to the album’s instrumental title track, and you’ll hear a raw, menacing rockabilly beast that would fit well on a Tarantino soundtrack. It will remind you (or reveal) why many call NRBQ the world’s greatest bar band (or garage band, or whatever). Play the whole album, and you’ll see how diverse the band’s styles are. Yet another great NRBQ album. There are many. The Felice Brothers – Jazz on the Autobahn

Here’s another of my favorites from 2021.
