Brandi Carlile – Right on Time – In Symphony

My wife, Melissa, and I drove over to Columbia, MO yesterday for the Roots N Blues Festival. Brandi Carlile was the headliner last night for the festival which, for the first time ever, featured an all-women lineup. Very cool! In honor of that, for the next few days, let’s hear it for the women… Song of the Day will feature women, today through Saturday, starting with one by Brandi. She’s had a big month. After two shows at Red Rocks (9/11-12) that I told you about in a previous email, she traveled to Nashville where she was awarded Artist of the Year (for the second time in three years) at the Americana Music Awards on Wednesday.  Then on Friday, she released new versions of her latest single, “Right on Time.” The song will be on her new album “In These Silent Days.” That album will be released on Friday. One of the new versions of the single is dubbed, “Right on Time – In Symphony” which was recorded at one of the two recent Red Rocks concerts (not sure which one) — with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra backing her. That is… Today’s Song  Title: Right on Time – In Symphony  Artist: Brandi Carlile  Album: Right on Time – In Symphony (2021)  YouTube Link (Official Video for the Album Version, Directed by Courtney Cox):https://youtu.be/tOpWqWK0q4U  Here are the Playlists:   Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204 Apple: https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Parker Millsap – Disappear

Oklahoma! So many great artists came from that state where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plains. From the Sooner State: Woody Guthrie, Roy Clark, John Fullbright, John Moreland, Reba McEntire, Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Garth Brooks, and… …today’s featured artist, Parker Millsap. When young Parker was 9 years old, his guitar teacher was (ware)HOUSE Concerts favorite Travis Linville, also from Oklahoma. Parker’s debut album, “Parker Millsap” is my favorite of his — one great song after another, including… Today’s Song  Title: Disappear  Artist: Parker Millsap  Album: Parker Millsap (2014)  YouTube Link:  https://youtu.be/GDylVlu-yxw Lyrics If there’s coffee in the pot, leave itWhat about about this house we bought? Sally Jaye – All I Ask For

This one’s a beauty. I mentioned Sally Jaye yesterday, when I presented husband Brian Wright’s, song “Patrick’s Crossing.” Sally and Brian run a label called Cafe Rooster Records (caferoosterrecords.com). The label has a great “farm to turntable” channel on Patreon (patreon.com/caferoosterrecords) Ton’s of great, “unreleased” stuff there. For now, check out this one from Sally’s 2014 release Too Many Heartaches, Pt. 1 (2014). As the album title suggests, you’ll hear some sad songs here — sad AND beautiful. The one I like best is heartbreaking, but it’s also a gorgeous testament to parental love. If you’ve ever loved a child, especially one who’s had a rocky ride, you may shed a tear (lyrics below). Enjoy… Today’s Song  Title: All I Ask For Artist: Sally Jaye Album: Too Many Heartaches, Pt. 1 (2014) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/mG6o062NR6w Lyrics They don’t believe the pastor any more. He said all they could do was pray.Their oldest son knocked off a drugstore, killed a clerk, and ran away.  They put their money in the plate. She made a blanket for the congregation’s newest babyAnd he put the roof upon the building by himself on a Saturday Rosemary stopped praying today put the bible in the drawerwhere the gun used to stay. And now her hands stopped shaking from turning all those pages every night. She said that: I don’t mind if I’m last in linefor sunny days, and pretty things, babies that don’t cry.I just want my messed up boy to be alright. That’s all I ask for. That’s all I ask for.  The’ll read about it in the paper. They’ll talk about it with a whisper. They’ll say it must have been an accident. It couldn’t really be that bad. They’ll say the Lord has special placesfor those who go before they’re called on.They’ll eat their Sunday dinner round the TV setand watch it fade away. Rosemary stopped praying today put the bible in the drawerwhere the gun used to stay. And now her hands stopped shaking from turning all those pages every night. She said that: I don’t mind if I’m last in linefor sunny days, and pretty things, babies that don’t cry.I just want my messed up boy to be alright. Brian Wright & The Sneak Ups – Patrick’s Crossing

I first saw Brian Wright at AmericanaFest 2017 when he was part of Aaron Lee Tasjan’s band. Since then, I’ve discovered his brilliant solo catalog, including his latest album Lapse of Luxury (2020). Brian accompanied his wife, Sally Jaye, when she played the (ware)HOUSE in April 2019. We hope to have them back when we reopen the (ware)HOUSE. If you have a chance to see Brian and his band live, I highly recommend it. He’s a brilliant songwriter and guitar player — who can rock the house AND make you laugh. Here’s some evidence… Today’s Song   Title: Patrick’s Crossing Artist: Brian Wright & The SneakUps Album: Lapse of Luxury (2020) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/N9mVCmYvLlo?__position__=0 Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Jim Croce – I Got A Name

`I was 8 years old when Jim Croce released his fourth album, Life and Times in March 1973. I loved that album when I was a kid — especially that song “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown.” Six months later (September 20, 1973), Croce died in a plane crash on his way to a concert. The day after that, the title track for his upcoming album was released. The full album was released in December 2013 — his fifth and final studio album. That title track is… Today’s Song   Title: I Got A Name Artist: Jim Croce Album: I Got A Name (1973) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/O_BEFyNNIvM Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

The Grahams – Glory Bound

The first (ware)HOUSE Concert was in May 2017. It was a surprise birthday party for my wife, Melissa. She and I fell in love with The Grahams a few months earlier when we heard them in Nashville. I invited them to be in on the surprise. My plan: If the concert went well with The Grahams, we would keep doing it. Well…that concert went well. And, we’ve had some fun since. Which brings us to the title track of The Grahams 2015 album. This is… Today’s Song   Title: Glory Bound Artist: The Grahams Album: Glory Bound (2015) YouTube Link (Official Video): https://youtu.be/WfgrVyQh27E Here are the Playlists: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Lucinda Williams – Cold, Cold Heart

Hank Williams was born on this day in 1923. He would have been 98 today. He didn’t make it to 30. In 2001, Lost Highway records released Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute, a collection of Hank’s great songs, covered by Bob Dylan, Sheryl Crow, Beck, Emmylou Harris, Keith Richards, Keb’ Mo’, Johnny Cash, and others, including the performer of… Today’s Song   Title: Cold, Cold Heart Artist: Lucinda Williams Album: Timeless: Hank Williams Tribute (2001) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/YdzcWBcq-R4 Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Matt Andersen (with Amy Helm) – Something to Lose

Canadian Matt Andersen has been releasing albums since 2008. But I hadn’t paid any attention until I head him belt one out with Amy Helm, daughter of the The Band’s Levon Helm. The third track from Andersen’s 2019 release “Halfway Home by Morning” is… Today’s Song   Title: Something to Lose Artist: Matt Andersen (with Amy Helm) Album: Halfway Home by Morning (2019) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/smWTDxA4N_k Here are the Playlists: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

The Staples Singers – Slippery People

Continuing the Staples Thread today. Yesterday’s song was Pop Staple’s “Friendship” which his daughter Mavis performed with Brandi Carlile at Red Rocks on Sunday). Also in her Sunday set at Red Rocks, Mavis performed “Slippery People,” the Talking Heads tune which the Staples Singers first covered in 1984. Pops Staples – Friendship

I mentioned in yesterday’s email that I’d be seeing Brandi Carlile at Red Rocks last night. Tanya Tucker was slated to open the show, but she fell ill last week. So Brandi called her friend Mavis Staples who jumped on a plane with her band and stepped in as the warm-up act. She’s 82, and she blew the roof off the amphitheater. During Brandi’s set, Mavis returned to the stage and performed with Brandi a tune by her dad, Pops Staples. I found a YouTube video from last night’s concert that captured the moment. That’s the video I share below. The version saved to the playlist is the studio recording by Pops. That’s why I share… Today’s Song   Title: Friendship Artist: Pops Staples Album: Don’t Lose This (2015) YouTube Link (Mavis and Brandi at Red Rocks 9/12/2021): https://youtu.be/Da9q-_NoIcM Lyrics: You can hold my handWhen you need to let goI can be your mountainWhen you’re feeling valley-lowI can be your streetlightShowing you the way homeYou can hold my handWhen you need to let go   I want a house with a crowded tableAnd a place by the fire for everyoneLet us take on the world while we’re young and ableAnd bring us back together when the day is done If we want a garden   We’re gonna have to sow the seedPlant a little happinessLet the roots run deepIf it’s love that we giveThen it’s love that we reapIf we want a gardenWe’re gonna have to sow the seed   Yeah I want a house with a crowded tableAnd a place by the fire for everyoneLet us take on the world while we’re young and ableAnd bring us back together when the day is done   The door is always openYour picture’s on my wallEveryone’s a little brokenAnd everyone belongsYeah, everyone belongs   I want a house with a crowded tableAnd a place by the fire for everyoneLet us take on the world while we’re young and ableAnd bring us back together when the day is doneAnd bring us back together when the day is done  Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj
