Sally Jaye – All I Ask For
This one’s a beauty.
I mentioned Sally Jaye yesterday, when I presented husband Brian Wright’s, song “Patrick’s Crossing.”
Sally and Brian run a label called Cafe Rooster Records (caferoosterrecords.com). The label has a great “farm to turntable” channel on Patreon (patreon.com/caferoosterrecords)
Ton’s of great, “unreleased” stuff there.
For now, check out this one from Sally’s 2014 release Too Many Heartaches, Pt. 1 (2014). As the album title suggests, you’ll hear some sad songs here — sad AND beautiful.
The one I like best is heartbreaking, but it’s also a gorgeous testament to parental love. If you’ve ever loved a child, especially one who’s had a rocky ride, you may shed a tear (lyrics below). Enjoy…

Lyrics
They don’t believe the pastor any more.
He said all they could do was pray.
Their oldest son knocked off a drugstore,
killed a clerk, and ran away.
They put their money in the plate.
She made a blanket for the congregation’s newest baby
And he put the roof upon the building
by himself on a Saturday
Rosemary stopped praying today
put the bible in the drawerwhere the gun used to stay.
And now her hands stopped shaking
from turning all those pages every night.
She said that: I don’t mind if I’m last in line
for sunny days, and pretty things,
babies that don’t cry.
I just want my messed up boy to be alright.
That’s all I ask for.
That’s all I ask for.
The’ll read about it in the paper.
They’ll talk about it with a whisper.
They’ll say it must have been an accident.
It couldn’t really be that bad.
They’ll say the Lord has special places
for those who go before they’re called on.
They’ll eat their Sunday dinner round the TV set
and watch it fade away.
Rosemary stopped praying today
put the bible in the drawer
where the gun used to stay.
And now her hands stopped shaking
from turning all those pages every night.
She said that: I don’t mind if I’m last in line
for sunny days, and pretty things, babies that don’t cry.
I just want my messed up boy to be alright.
That’s all I ask for.
That’s all I ask for.
That’s all I ask for.
That’s all I ask for.
