Shawn Colvin – Killing the Blues
Happy Birthday, Shawn Colvin.
She was born on January 10, 1958.
In 1994, she released an album of covers that included the song I share today.
That song was written by Rowland Salley, who played bass in Chris Isaak’s band.
Salley never got anywhere as a solo artist, although he did release an album that includes this song.
And it’s a GREAT song.
It’s been covered by John Prine, Chris Smither, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, Shooter Jennings and Billy Ray Cyrus, and Colvin — whose version I like best…

Lyrics
Leaves were falling just like embers
In colors red and gold they set us on fire
Burning just like moonbeams in our eyes
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Now I’m guilty of something
Hope you never do because there is nothing
Any sadder than losing yourself in love
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Then you ask me just to leave you
To set out on my own and get what I needed
You want me to find what I’ve already had
Somebody said they saw me
Swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
Somebody said they saw me
I was swinging the world by the tail
Bouncing over a white cloud
Killing the blues
