The Highwomen – Crowded Table

Background for today’s song:  My wife’s family has a farm in south-central Missouri. There’s a house with a porch that overlooks a gorgeous Ozark valley. On the porch is a table where family, friends, old guests and new have gathered for endless nights — great food, great conversations, great memories.  We were there a couple of months ago, with some old friends, after we’d all gotten shots and felt like it was safe to crowd around that table again.  As we sat there, I told them about today’s song. It was released before the pandemic, and I liked it then. But it took on greater meaning for me as we sheltered in place, separated from friends and loved ones, wondering when we could gather again.  I played the song for everyone around the table that night and told them how grateful I was to be at that crowded table again. Here’s the chorus:  I want a house with a crowded table And a place by the fire for everyone Let us take on the world while we’re young and able And bring us back together when the day is done When I introduced Natalie Hemby’s song of the day on Friday, I mentioned The Highwomen. That  song is their’s — written by Brandi Carlile, Natalie Hemby, and Lori McKenna. I’m in Denver today, with my wife — back together with our daughter. Tonight we go to Red Rocks to see Brandi Carlile.  That’s why I share… Today’s Song   Title: Crowded Table Artist: The Highwomen Album: The Highwomen (2019) YouTube Link (Official Video): https://youtu.be/ZPfI8zBWub4 Lyrics: You can hold my handWhen you need to let goI can be your mountainWhen you’re feeling valley-lowI can be your streetlightShowing you the way homeYou can hold my handWhen you need to let go   I want a house with a crowded tableAnd a place by the fire for everyoneLet us take on the world while we’re young and ableAnd bring us back together when the day is done If we want a garden   We’re gonna have to sow the seedPlant a little happinessLet the roots run deepIf it’s love that we giveThen it’s love that we reapIf we want a gardenWe’re gonna have to sow the seed   Yeah I want a house with a crowded tableAnd a place by the fire…

Bruce Springsteen – Into the Fire

9/11/2021. 20 years since THE 9/11. Bruce Springsteen reunited the E-Street Band and released “The Rising” in July 2002. 15 songs. 15 different characters trying to make sense of the senseless, declaring their love for those lost, searching for hope and fortitude, honoring fallen heroes. I love this album. The second track is Today’s Song (with lyrics included below)   Title: Into the Fire Artist: Bruce Springsteen Album: The Rising (2002) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/NE02BunFtbo Lyrics: Well the sky was falling and streaked with bloodI heard you calling me, then you disappeared into the dustUp the stairs, into the fireYeah up the stairs, into the fireI need your kiss, but love and duty called you someplace higherSomewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love give us love May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love bring us love You gave your love to see, in fields of red and autumn brownYou gave your love to me and lay your young body downUp the stairs, into the fireYeah up the stairs, into the fireI need you near, but love and duty called you someplace higherSomewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love give us love May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love bring us love May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love bring us love It was dark, too dark to see, you held me in the light you gaveYou lay your hand on me, walked into the darkness of your smoky graveUp the stairs, into the fireYeah up the stairs, into the fireI need your kiss, love and duty called you someplace higherSomewhere up the stairs, into the fire May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love give us love May your strength give us strengthMay your faith give us faithMay your hope give us hopeMay your love bring us love May your strength give us strengthMay your…

Natalie Hemby – Time Honored Tradition

Happy Weekend. Yesterday’s song: Travis Linville’s “I’m Still Here,” co-written with Natalie Hemby. She’s up next… Natalie Hemby was one of those unknown legends around Nashville. She wasn’t out front. She was co-writing most of the time — one great song after another — for artists you know. She had a solo album, but she operated, mostly, in the background. Artists knew her; the public didn’t… …until she joined a supergroup called The Highwomen. Brandi Carlile, Maren Morris, Amanda Shires — names many know. And Natalie Hemby. Now many know her, too. Listen to “The Highwomen” album (2019) if you haven’t already. Then…step back and listen to that solo album I mentioned. It’s called “Puxico.” And I’m having trouble choosing just one from this great album. But choose one, I must. So here is… Today’s Song   Title: Time Honored Tradition Artist: Natalie Hemby Album: Puxico (2017) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/h9XXXv3C5Bc Here are the Playlists: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Travis Linville – I’m Still Here

Travis Linville is the only artist who has appeared at the (ware)HOUSE more than once — May 2018 and June 2019, plus a special appearance last month in my backyard. And he has been one of the most prolific, entertaining online performers during the pandemic. When I began to shelter in place and work from home, I began most mornings by tuning in to Travis’ Facebook live shows — straight from his living room. And I’ve been a satisfied subscriber to his “Bootleg Club” at Patreon.com/travislinville where he regularly posts new recordings — covers, rarities, upcoming releases, etc. If you like today’s Song of the Day, look up Travis and sign up (I think it’s only $5/month) to get access to his entire Patreon catalog — past, present, and future. Sites like Patreon help artists like Travis when touring opportunities are limited. Travis co-wrote the title song for his latest album with Natalie Hemby! If you’re thinking, “Natalie Who?,” don’t worry. I’ll give you the scoop on her in tomorrow’s email (you’ll want to hear THAT song, and others of hers). For now, all you need to know is Travis thinks it was mighty cool to co-write with Natalie (he’s right), and they created something great which is… Today’s Song   Title: I’m Still Here Artist: Travis Linville Album: I’m Still Here (2021) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/LOnjHFDPeOs Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Shawn Colvin – Tenderness on the Block

I got lots of great feedback re: yesterday’s song of the day (Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me in Your Heart”). So…let’s keep the Warren Zevon thread going. His 1978 album “Excitable Boy” is a classic. Shawn Colvin covered one of the tracks from that album on her 1992 album “Fat City.” That cover is… Today’s Song Title: Tenderness on the Block Artist: Shawn Colvin Album: Fat City (1992) YouTube Link: https://youtu.be/wfCPQ6QU7c0 Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Warren Zevon – Keep Me In Your Heart

The great Warren Zevon was only 53 when he died due to mesothelioma on this day in 2003. After he was diagnosed in 2002, Zevon hit the recording studio to create one last album. That album, “The Wind,” is a beauty. Most of the songs are NOT about his illness and the inevitable end. The last track on the album, though, is a beautiful farewell that always leads me to shed a tear — for Warren Zevon and all loved ones I’ve lost. That track is… Today’s Song Title: Keep Me In Your Heart Artist: Warren Zevon Album: The Wind (2003) YouTube Link (Video): https://youtu.be/RMTKb-pgxGI Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale – It Hurts Me

Another birthday today, September 6. Buddy Miller turns 69. In 2012, Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale made the album “Buddy and Jim.” Here’s a sad song from that album… Today’s Song Title: It Hurts Me Artist: Buddy Miller & Jim Lauderdale Album: Buddy and Jim (2012) YouTube Link (Video): https://youtu.be/dVU6fIh5YAA Here are the Playlists: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Loudon Wainwright III – Suddenly It’s Christmas

It’s Loudon Wainwright III’s 75th birthday today. Let’s celebrate with one of his funny songs (he has many)… Today’s Song Title: Suddenly It’s Christmas Artist: Loudon Wainwright III Album: Career Moves (1993) YouTube Link (Official Video):https://youtu.be/ew6rVcL3Up8 Here are the Playlists:   Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Tom Waits – (Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night

Happy Saturday. Seems like a good day to share a Saturday song.   I first heard this when Shawn Colvin covered it (great version, worth checking out). But Tom Waits’ original is the one that earns a spot on the playlist. So without further ado, here’s… Today’s Song Title: (Looking For) The Heart of Saturday Night Artist: Tom Waits Album: The Heart of Saturday Night (1974) YouTube Link (Official Video):https://youtu.be/f7UHd7NVegE Here are the Playlists: Spotify:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3xYKtYparrdJRYAjBj9kjx?si=eb6c3ebc30484204   Apple:https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/ware-house-concerts-song-of-the-day/pl.u-Ggz26cZlAVLj

Aaron Lee Tasjan – Computer of Love

Yesterday’s Song of the Day was Aaron Lee Tasjan’s “Memphis Rain” from his 2016 album “Silver Tears.”  Today, more ALT — this time from his February 2021 release “Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!” I described “Memphis Rain” as hugging Hank Williams, Roy Orbison, and other ghosts of Nashville past.  Tasjan recorded today’s song in Nashville, but you won’t hear any Music Row twang here. More Beatles and Bowie than Brooks & Dunn.  Tasjan defies genre labels. You’ll see… …when you compare yesterday’s song with… Today’s Song Title: Computer of Love Artist: Aaron Lee Tasjan Album: Tasjan! Tasjan! Tasjan!
