Pops Staples – Friendship
I mentioned in yesterday’s email that I’d be seeing Brandi Carlile at Red Rocks last night.
Tanya Tucker was slated to open the show, but she fell ill last week.
So Brandi called her friend Mavis Staples who jumped on a plane with her band and stepped in as the warm-up act. She’s 82, and she blew the roof off the amphitheater.
During Brandi’s set, Mavis returned to the stage and performed with Brandi a tune by her dad, Pops Staples.
I found a YouTube video from last night’s concert that captured the moment. That’s the video I share below. The version saved to the playlist is the studio recording by Pops.
